Understanding Geothermal Energy
For millions of years, the Earth has contained super-heated waters at various levels of its surface. The process is known as geothermal heating, and it is a continual and ongoing activity. These waters escape through steam vents and geysers on a regular basis. Because such waters are available on a predictable schedule, humans have been actually using them for Read the rest of this entry »

Alternative Energy – Time To Get Moving
Alternative Sources of Energy is a popular news topic these days. While some are still seeking new options the truth is we already have existing technologies that can make an immediate impact. The problem is simpler and more affordable methods to harness renewable energy of choice such as sun, wind, water and others are needed. Renewable energy sources Read the rest of this entry »

The Earth’s surface temperature has risen by about 1 degree Fahrenheit in the past century, with accelerated warming during the past two decades. There is new and stronger evidence that most of the warming over the last 50 years is attributable to human activities. Human activities have altered the chemical composition of the atmosphere through the buildup of greenhouse gases—primarily carbon

Solar power is quickly becoming a very popular choice all over the planet. More and more countries are becoming aware of the need to move away from fossil fuels while protecting the environment for future generations. As the world becomes more educated, there is a growing concern to maintain healthy living standards. Fossil fuel consumption is now being seen as something that needs to be limited because is not a renewable resource. Solar Power, unlike fossil fuels, is a readily abundant source of power and is probably the most plentiful means of power we have on the earth. Its use in houses is becoming more popular as a way to lower electric bills, save the environment, and preserve our natural resources for future generations.
The advantages of solar power are easy to understand. It will reduce your home heating and cooling costs. Solar Power can lower or eliminate your electric bill entirely. Solar energy still functions during power outages and in areas where electric cabling is impossible. There is no shortage of the suns energy and it cuts down on our dependence on fossil fuels.
Obviously the drawback of solar power is that it can not be used in areas that do not receive ample sunlight. Depending on what type of roof you have, installation may be very labor intensive and cost a lot to replace and install…assuming you are not making them yourself. Also, if you choose to mount your solar panel system on your roof, the cost of roof repairs will be much higher. These are just a few points you may want to consider.
However, by making solar panels yourself, you can decide where to place them. You can mount them away from your house on unused sections of land or any other area where there is enough sunlight. You can also choose smaller solar panels that do not take up as much space but will still help cut down on your energy bills each month. Furthermore, there are ways to mount them wirelessly that can eliminate the need for placement on your roof or stands.
By combining solar panels with compact florescent lights or LED lights, you can drastically lower your energy bill. LED lights take very little power to run and last for many years making them a perfect combination with your solar system. If you make the panels yourself, your overall cost of installation and set-up will be much lower. With the proper instructions it is very possible to build a good quality solar panel for under $200 dollars. Furthermore, if you combine your system with other sources of natural energy like wind power, your costs will be much lower.

So you’re finally tired of those exorbitant electricity bills, or, you’re catching onto a “greener” way of life. Either way, solar power may have many advantages for you and your home.
There are many obvious positives to using solar power. One is that solar power produces no waste. We all benefit when there are fewer pollutants in the air. The rays of the sun, which are the source of solar power are free, and, without doubt, the sun will rise each morning. In other words, solar power is an absolutely free and renewable energy source. Even local governments are jumping on the solar bandwagon. Perhaps you may have noticed in your local area your state highways using solar powered signs warning of roadwork.
There are initial high costs involved in outfitting your home for solar power but the savings realized over the years will quickly make up for the start-up costs.
The most popular way of harnessing solar power for most homeowners is through the use of solar panels. These solar panels are made up of what are called photovoltaic cells which are able to covert sunlight directly into electricity. These solar panels are placed on the roof of a building. The size of the solar panel is determined by the amount of energy needed. The panels can easily be added onto if needs increase. Some new homes are now being built using these photovoltaic cells as roof tiles.
These solar panels are generally easy to install for most DIY’ers. They require virtually no maintenance, and will last for decades.
There are other ways to take advantage of the sun’s energy. If you are building a new home and have solar power in mind talk with your architect. You can have your new home built facing the sun where it can take full advantage of the energy and warmth. Have large windows installed to take in as much light as possible, especially in winter months when the sun is lower in the sky. Plant trees that will shade your home in the hot summertime.

It was always my dream of living a life completely energy independent. The thought of living “off-grid” has intrigued me for a long time not only because of the tremendous savings that I might see from producing my own power but the added knowledge that I was helping the environment and also no longer dependent upon any person or entity for my electrical needs.

My interests include solar power, wind power, mini hydroelectric and also ethanol. Mini hydroelectric is sort of out of the question at the moment since I don’t have a small stream on my property, but I know that one day I will and then can begin to dabble in this aspect of alternative energy. In the meantime, my focus has been on solar and wind power.
In my quest for energy independence I first started looking at the commercially available options and was blown away by the cost of solar panels and wind turbines. It would have taken me years to break even. I then searched for free resources on the internet with limited success. Like the old saying goes, “you get what you pay for!” I will admit that there is a lot of information out on the internet that will teach you theory and practice to help you understand solar and wind power and there are some good free plans for solar hot water heaters but what I was looking for was an inexpensive way to start generating my own power as soon as possible.
What I found that helped me to take the first step in the direction of energy independence using alternative energy was a book called “Make Natural Power.” It is a “Do It Yourself” guide that will show you how to build both solar panels and wind turbines with readily available materials. This was exactly what I was looking for!
The cost of the book and materials kept the project in the ballpark of what one would consider reasonable and also kept the time required to earn back my initial investment short. I did like the fact that the materials were easy to find locally and the instructions were easy to understand. As a matter of fact, the information was laid out in such an easy to understand manner that I felt that it was almost overdone or oversimplified although the information was not found to be lacking. Basically, I believe this book was written with the complete novice in mind so anyone who can read and follow instructions can build a solar panel or wind turbine from these instructions. For some, like me, this may make the book a bit boring yet still informative and others will appreciate the manner in which this guide is laid out. I did used to work construction when I was younger but my neighbors 14 year old son took a look at the plans and felt confident that he could complete the project successfully.
Overall, I liked the book “Make Natural Power” and was able to build both the solar panel and wind turbine for under $200. I haven’t calculated how much I have saved on my electric bill but do notice a difference and other reviewers have said that they noticed a significant savings in their electric bills.
