Make Natural Power Review – DIY Alternative Energy For the Layman?

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by admin on 10-07-2009

It was always my dream of living a life completely energy independent. The thought of living “off-grid” has intrigued me for a long time not only because of the tremendous savings that I might see from producing my own power but the added knowledge that I was helping the environment and also no longer dependent upon any person or entity for my electrical needs.

My interests include solar power, wind power, mini hydroelectric and also ethanol. Mini hydroelectric is sort of out of the question at the moment since I don’t have a small stream on my property, but I know that one day I will and then can begin to dabble in this aspect of alternative energy. In the meantime, my focus has been on solar and wind power.

In my quest for energy independence I first started looking at the commercially available options and was blown away by the cost of solar panels and wind turbines. It would have taken me years to break even. I then searched for free resources on the internet with limited success. Like the old saying goes, “you get what you pay for!” I will admit that there is a lot of information out on the internet that will teach you theory and practice to help you understand solar and wind power and there are some good free plans for solar hot water heaters but what I was looking for was an inexpensive way to start generating my own power as soon as possible.

What I found that helped me to take the first step in the direction of energy independence using alternative energy was a book called “Make Natural Power.” It is a “Do It Yourself” guide that will show you how to build both solar panels and wind turbines with readily available materials. This was exactly what I was looking for!

The cost of the book and materials kept the project in the ballpark of what one would consider reasonable and also kept the time required to earn back my initial investment short. I did like the fact that the materials were easy to find locally and the instructions were easy to understand. As a matter of fact, the information was laid out in such an easy to understand manner that I felt that it was almost overdone or oversimplified although the information was not found to be lacking. Basically, I believe this book was written with the complete novice in mind so anyone who can read and follow instructions can build a solar panel or wind turbine from these instructions. For some, like me, this may make the book a bit boring yet still informative and others will appreciate the manner in which this guide is laid out. I did used to work construction when I was younger but my neighbors 14 year old son took a look at the plans and felt confident that he could complete the project successfully.

Overall, I liked the book “Make Natural Power” and was able to build both the solar panel and wind turbine for under $200. I haven’t calculated how much I have saved on my electric bill but do notice a difference and other reviewers have said that they noticed a significant savings in their electric bills.

Homebuilt Wind Generator Power – An Alternative Power Method That …

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by admin on 09-04-2009

Well, that’s a kind of an old photo, but maybe it is inspirational. Let’s make wind power a traditional method of alternative power supply. Here is an article about it that I hope you enjoy:

These days, more and more alternative energy sources are being used each and every day. With the gas crisis and other environmental issues arising, we need to look into alternative methods for energy. Some of these alternative methods have been around for some time, proving themselves and showing people that the energy they provide is something people can rely on. The two main sources are wind and solar energy. For this article, I’m going to touch more on wind energy, and how you can build your own wind generator to power small appliances around your home!

Using a homebuilt wind generator for power is one of the ways you can help contribute to conserving energy. Not only that, but building one of these machines can be cost-effective, and fun to do! The supplies required to build one of these can be found at your local hardware store. Generally, you can get supplies for less than $200. If you really wanted to save some extra cash AND help save the earth, you could opt to find recycled parts. You can easily find steel tubing and other materials needs at a local recycling center. Using recycled parts is a big way to show that you are really in with the “green movement”.

Lastly, in order to build an effective wind generator, you need a great set of instructions, or a detailed guide to follow along with. You really can’t build one of these yourself without this, unless you know someone who builds wind generators for a living. A great set of instructions will be the difference in whether your machine will perform great or be a flop.

So, now you are aware of what it takes to make your own wind generator. If you’re into alternative energy, consider building one and help save the earth. You never know – You’re skills might come in handy some day when alternative energy is used all over the world!

Indoor Vegetable Gardening

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by admin on 06-04-2009

The two basic forms of vegetable gardening are indoor vegetable gardening and outdoor vegetable gardening-and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Indoor gardens have a much easier time with pests but a much harder time with light and ventilation. Outdoor gardens have more space and are more traditonal. Each form of gardening has its own share of difficulties that have to be overcome and which involve factors such as deciding on using the right kind of soil and learning about how much water is to be given in order to grow your vegetables in the best possible manner. There is a whole science to getting the right amount of light and full spectrum light bulbs so that the plants don’t get too long or "leggy."

Not So Difficult

There also no doubts the fact that indoor vegetable gardening is not as difficult when it concerns preparing and maintaining the soil as would be the case with outdoor vegetable gardening. By repeatedly planting vegetables in outdoor soil, there is a consequent loss of nutrients and another problem with outdoor vegetable gardening is that it requires using more fertilizers and diseases.

Indoor vegetable gardening on the other hand, does not require much use of fertilizers though maintaining proper levels of fertilizers is a vexing problem that needs to be dealt with adequately. Also, when it concerns indoor vegetable gardening, there is need to learn about how to properly balance drainage of water with retaining suitable levels of waters. Here’s a quick tip -Never put a terra cotta pot directly on wood. It will rot the wood underneath and cause permanent damage. Always put a terra cotta pot on a water proof surface of some sort. Like a trivet or a plastic plate. The wood must breathe.

A common indoor vegetable gardening problem that you will also have to face is that indoor soil does not drain tself as well as does outdoor soil and there are also many dangers involved, especially if you make the mistake of giving too much water to the soil. You have to have good drainage in a container or indoor garden. But the soil you have indoors will be high quality, since you likely just bought a big bag of it.

There is also no simple way of automatically watering your indoor vegetable garden and in some cases, the mess and the cost actually makes automatic watering a most impractical option. Another concern as far as indoor vegetable gardening is concerned is giving the vegetables enough light. This is not a problem with outdoor vegetable gardening because if you have chosen the spot for your outdoor vegetable garden well, chances are it will get plenty of natural sunlight.

As far as lighting and indoor vegetable gardening go, you may even find it necessary to shift your plants all through the day so as to ensure that the vegetables get light wherever sunlight is entering into the home at different times of the day. The bright side is that in case there is too much sunlight, you can always pull the shades and protect your plants from the danger of excessive heat. This is mostly going to be an issue in a high altitude environment but not a real issue in most homes.

The best part about indoor vegetable gardening is that if you place your plants near a window you will give the plants the advantage of a greenhouse without having to incur the expenses or do the work required for growing plants in a greenhouse.

For those who are worried about getting the most out of their indoor vegetable gardening or any other form of gardening, it would certainly pay to check out some of the better vegetable gardening books that reveal secrets about how to improve your garden. Once you have understood how to get the most out of your gardening endeavors, it is then up to you to choose between indoor vegetable gardening and outdoor vegetable gardening. However, in most cases the decision is made for you and it depends on the on the amount of space that you have available for your garden.

Back Pain and Hand Pain, Ergo: Ergonomic Gardeing Tools

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by admin on 04-04-2009

Here is an article I wrote regarding why you need to spash out occasionally and buy the good tools. If you plan on gardening as a supplement to your purchased food source I think you will see the value of avoiding all those cheap, made in China tools that end up hurting your hands and back.

Why Using Ergonomic Gardening Tools is So Important

Gardening is one of the most popular and favored activities. People have been gardening for centuries, and not only is this an incredibly fun and enjoyable hobby but as well with it you can produce some fresh, delicious fruits and vegetables and beautiful plants. Gardening is incredibly fruitful, a very prosperous pastime, and definitely one that everyone should try out at least once.

Of course before you get started you are going to have to make sure that you have all the right tools, and although there are hundreds to choose from there are only a few that are truly essential and which you are going to need o get started in gardening.

Have you ever heard of ergonomic gardening tools before? If not, then this is something that you should definitely be interested in learning about now.

What They Are

Ergonomic gardening tools are tools that are designed specifically to be comfortable and not make your hands sore after you are done using them. This is a huge benefit to gardeners because it means that you will be able to spend lots more time out in your garden without getting tired or sore.

Ergonomic gardening tools are particularly useful for people who have chronic pain, such as arthritis sufferers. You can find all of your basic tools but in ergonomic form, and you really just have to know where the best places are to look because only certain stores offer these ergonomic gardening tools.

There are budding knives, grafting knives, hand pruners, hedge shears, grass shears, indoor garden tools loppers, trowels and weeders, saws, sheaths, and much more.

You can still fit all your ergonomic gardening tools in your regular gardening tool belt which is nice, and which will help ensure that you keep all of your tools in one place and do not lose any.

Tips

There are also a few tips that you will want to keep in mind if you want to garden without getting sore. For one, you should always limit the amount of time that you spend gardening each day. Of course, just as with anything else, if you overdo it then you are going to feel it in the morning.

Gardening may not seem particularly strenuous, but if you really sit and consider just how much effort is put into gardening, in reality you are using almost every muscle in your body and so it is no wonder that your muscles end up getting so sore.
